Wonderland has made it’s way to the Mayflower!

Wonderland at the Mayflower

When I heard Wonderland was coming to the Mayflower I was excited, as I love all things Alice! This adaptation draws inspiration from Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass.

My recommendation for this show is to remember it’s an adaptation, as the opening scene with a backdrop of what resembles Millbrook Tower surprised me somewhat. As the show continued I loved figuring out what was from the original story and the modern takes.

The Cast

If you remember Rachael Wooding from Britain’s Got Talent and her show stopping audition, you won’t be disappointed. She played Alice using her incredible voice wonderfully, and always adding a touch of humour for added enjoyment throughout the show.

Do you remember Cilla from Corrie (Wendi Peters)? Well if you do, you’re about to see her in a whole different light in Wonderland. As the Queen of Hearts, forever nibbling at jam tarts and belting out some goosebump inducing songs. She certainly surprised me for the better.

Wendi Peters as The Queen of Hearts in Wonderland at the Mayflower

One of the smaller parts but one of my notable favourites was Kayi Ushe as Absolem the Caterpillar. With his amusing take on ‘who are you?’ and kooky jazz solo, he was definitely a favourite for me.

The Caterpiller in Wonderland the musical

The Caterpiller

The Mad Hatter played by Natalie McQueen absolutely stole the show. Her voice blew me away! When I initially saw a female Mad Hatter I was unsure, but when she took a dark villainous turn she instantly became my favourite character.

The Production

The production was exceedingly well polished, the dancing and songs were all performed exceptionally well. The costumes were a real hit too!

If you are a die hard Alice fan and don’t like the idea of deviating from the story, this won’t be the show for you. However, if you’re up for opening your mind to the world of Wonderland and all of it’s weird and wonderful ways this is a great way to spend an evening.

Wonderland is showing at Southampton Mayflower from Tuesday 18th April-Saturday 22nd April.
