So you may have noticed me raving about The Real Greek Southampton all over social media this week. I was lucky enough to go along to their launch party*, so I thought I’d share some of the highlights with you. The Real Greek is a well established restaurant in London and Windsor, and believe me when I say we’re lucky to have one in Southampton.
Cocktails at the Santorini Bar
The Real Greek Southampton offers the first cocktail bar to the chain. When you are waiting at the bar for your table you can enjoy free nibbles and cocktails which are competitively priced. I got rather acquainted with the Bellinis while my other half, who prefers a harder drink, was a bit bleary eyed after a few too many Manhattans.
Take a seat
We were promptly shown to our seats with a jug of water to follow, a fab touch, as I hate waiting for what seems like an age for something as simple as water. Our waiter was friendly and talked us through the menu. As I’m being healthy after taking the plunge and joining Slimming World (don’t tell my consultant about the Bellinis), I was pleasantly surprised with the choice of appertising healthy plates.
We started with the dolmades and were recommended by the waiter to try them with a side of tzatziki. Wow was he right! They were beautiful. The mains came out on a plate stacker, which is great as your table doesn’t feel overrun with plates. We went for the Aegean prawns, grilled halloumi, lamb skewer, chicken skewer and a greek salad. They were very accommodating when I asked for no olive oil on the salad (I was trying to claw it back after all the Bellinis). Everything was beautifully cooked and full of flavour. I felt full and satisfied, but not in a disgusting food coma, which I often get after lots of fried foods.
Tonia Buxton is the face of Greek food in the UK, you may have seen her on Saturday Kitchen or hosting her show on the Discovery Channel. She is heavily involved with the development of the recipes in The Real Greek. I had the privilege of meeting Tonia at the launch party, and it is very obvious she is passionate and takes pride in the food she produces, this is not just reflected when talking to her, but also with the food.
The Real Greek Southampton take the stance that food should be enjoyed, the atmosphere is very relaxed and you are encouraged to take as long as you need. If you’re anything like me you will prefer this approach, as I hate feeling like a restaurant is getting ready to turn me out.
