I’ve been waddling around today with a food baby and a sore head thanks to the fabulous evening I spent at Franco Manco Southampton*. As I had such a brilliant evening with I thought I would share my best bits.
The restaurant itself is beautifully styled and feels authentically Italian as soon as you walk through the doors. I was greeted with a warm welcome and joined my table, I had the pleasure of sitting next to the founder Giuseppe Mascoli who wasted no time in telling us about his menu.
Giuseppe told us about the slow-rising sourdough that forms the soft flavourful crust. But what impressed me the most is the pizza is cooked at 500 degrees for 55 seconds, so if you go there ravenous be sure to have that hole quickly filled! Giuseppe nominated Ellisha (The Southampton Girl) to step up and tackle making a pizza for herself, and I enjoyed getting stuck into trying her pizza with her.
We tried a selection of pizzas from the menu, and starting at £4.95 we were finding it hard to believe they are cheaper than your average greasy take away after a night out. They were fresh and flavoursome, I’d strongly recommend the tomato, mozzarella and basil. It’s worth noting there are specials, so the menu is always changing, which is great if you like to change things up.
If you’re anything like me a glass of wine just seems like the natural accompaniment to any meal, however, I am no wine buff. If I like it I drink it! But never have a clue as to why I like it so much. Francesco Cali who is Franco Manca’s master sommelier was on hand to talk us through the wine list. It was very clear Francesco is passionate about wine and where it comes from. As we all have differing tastes I would suggest making your way through the wine list, and at under £20 for their bottles it won’t break the bank doing so. A really unique wine was the chilled sparking red, I could sound like I know what I’m talking about with it’s ‘fragrant notes’ but i’ll just say I went for a second glass!
Franco Manca Southampton doesn’t take bookings so just pop in for a quick bite, I know i’ll definitely be back because I have been thinking about the tiramasu all day.
